I finally caught up on Free! and I can’t really claim to be overly thrilled. While this episode was packed with history, I can’t help but feel “meh” about it. I suppose that might be because I feel that, before now, we’ve been given more than enough flashbacks to atone for the lack of focus on Rin and Haru’s history that to suddenly dedicate nearly an entire episode to it seems a bit of an overkill.
Fortunately, episode ten did give us a few insights and answers that we have been looking for – like Ama-chan’s identity as a swimsuit model. Really, she’s absolutely adorable. I’d like to see her and the coach hook up.
Speaking of the coach, it’s nice to see him actually helping the swim team by doing what he did best when they were younger: guiding them to victory.
We also get to see just how much the conflict between Rin and Haru affects Rei. Rei’s new to the group so it’s to be expected that he’d be a bit uncomfortable, but to go so far as to ditch swim practice before the regional tournament and actually confront Rin face to face? That takes guts. I didn’t even know butterflies had guts.
So yeah, there you have it. I apologize for the lack of a lengthy review; I just didn’t feel there was really enough to go on about.
