Episode Review: Free! 09

After watching episode nine of Free!, I’m happy to say I’m almost entirely caught up on my reviews – ten will be posted tomorrow! Unfortunately, I didn’t really feel that there was a lot to see in this episode. It had its cute moments, but for the most part, it was ninety-five percent filler and five percent plot.

After winning the relay and making it to regionals, Nagisa and Rei decide its time to take Haru’s mind off the water. How do they do that? Simple: they take him to the festival. Naturally, it came as no surprise when Rin showed up. Unplanned coincidences like that always happen. While I feel that the whole “keep Haru from seeing Rin” was a bit over exaggerated, I do have to admit that Rei is still as drool-worthy as he was when we first met him. His “super-stealthy” bravado was absolutely delicious.

I also have to admit that Ama-chan and Gou were absolutely adorable. (It’s also very easy to forget that Ama is a teacher who is probably considerably older than the rest of the gang.) For the most part, the episode deals with avoiding Rin and partaking in squiddy festivities – the sort that has made me crave squid, suddenly!

Anyways, returning to the plot: Rin has a heart, much to my surprise. Clearly, watching his childhood friends swim without him drove a stake through his heart. We watch as he wanders to their elementary school, clutches his chest, and runs away. Could it be that the pointy-toothed shark is hurting? Oh yes. But, as they say: Rin made his own bed — he’ll have to lay in it.

Despite his less than savory treatment of Haruka after he won the 100m free swim, Rin makes a sudden decision to join in the relay at regionals – which also did not surprise me. Haruka’s admission that he wants to swim with his friends was grand, but now that he’s going to have to swim with Rin again, will it have an adverse affect on him? Honestly, Rin just needs to be punched in the throat.
